Behind the Scenes
Although I have trained Jiu Jitsu for quite some time, the idea for this film didn’t occur until I experienced Jiu Jitsu through the lens of my camera at a local tournament. There is a very special moment in Jiu Jitsu where you must leave your ego and reconnect with your true primal self, essentially being broken and reborn, and that is what I envisioned capturing for this film. All process photos taken by Sam Allen.

Portraits
The intention for the portraits was to showcase the transformation of each person’s physical essence before and after a match. I fused these two moments together in order to convey the transition from one state of being into the other.
