Synopsis
-
During pre-production of the film, I focused on introducing abstract ideas and exploring the realm of contemporary sci-fi film prop design.

Selects
Above is a series of our concepts created during the pre-production of Captain Marvel. Covering everything from concept design to CGI prop-building, our goal was to provide visuals for the script and help bring the directors' vision to life.
Process
-
Console
The idea behind the Console was to create a new form of visual navigation for the characters in the film. Using light and hypnotic fluids, the pilots would enter a transcendental state of cognition, allowing them to become one with their vessel.

Symbols
Captain Marvel is filled with symbolism. We spent a great amount of time devising different language systems to populate the worlds within the film. Here is a glimpse of a few of the concepts and symbols created during production.
Process
-
Interface Language
Throughout the production of the film, there was a need to articulate how the languages in the film would connect with the characters in the film. All in all, we created three different types of language which had opposing forms and styles.

Vessel
One of my favorite explorations during production was the construction of the Vessel. The concepts above feature the Console, which is a small part of a much larger ship. I loved the idea of creating a ship based out of a morphing crystal exoskeleton that would evolve and react to each flight and battle.

Mind Melding
The goal behind these designs was to conceive of a device which could attach to a character's head, fragment their thoughts, and allow others to interact with past memories. It was an incredibly fun design project to explore this rich concept.
Process
-
Navigation
Exploring other ways to navigate, these Vessel concepts were about pushing the boundaries of contemporary sci-fi in film and seeing how far we could go.
